New Mexico State University, more commonly known as NMSU, is a major land-grant university, located in Las Cruces, which is a city in Doña Ana County, NM, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 92 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state.
NMSU was founded in 1888, under the name of Las Cruces College, as an institution of higher learning, with small buildings, located in the heart of the small village which is known today as Las Cruces City. In 1960, the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts officially became New Mexico State University, having today an enrolment estimated at nearly 20 000 students, offering an extensive range of educational programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, as well as doctoral degree.
The athletic teams from NMSU are known as the New Mexico Aggies, simply called Aggies, by fans, representing a nickname which reflects the agricultural beginning of the university. Since 2005, the Aggies compete in the Western Athletic Conference, being best known for their achievements in basketball and football, in which they’ve experienced success, many times, in the past years. The basketball team has seen 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, 14 conference championships and 5 NIT Tournament appearances, and the football team has won the Sun Bowl in 1959 and 1960, also winning 4 seasons and 2 conference championships- in ’76 and ’78.
